UKIP support the breakup of Belgium

I suppose UKIP are rather too easy a target, yet I couldn't help but smile at something Nigel Farage said in an interview with the BBC:

He describes the election of a Dutch-speaking separatist party in Belgium's general election, which favours the gradual break up of the country, as "delicious", seeing it another sign that Europe is heading towards break up as a political entity.

BBC, 9 August 2010

If only he had the virtue of consistency. For if he supports the idea of Belgium splitting into Flanders and Wallonia, he would surely also support the idea of Wales and Scotland becoming independent of the UK. In fact he might even persuade his party to put more effort into making this happen, for he could then present it as "another sign that Europe is heading towards break up as a political entity".

But consistency is not one of UKIP's virtues. UKIP and the BNP are the only parties that want to undo the devolution we have and recentralize the UK.

good point, though I think we should agree with UKIP on this point as it will be another small step in the right direction for us.

Plaid of course is in alliance in the EU with N-VA, the Flemish nationalist party which now holds the prime ministership of Belgium.

Worth reading Paul Belien's 'A Thorne in Brussels' for a Flemish nationalist and anti-Belgian (and especially anti Belgian monarchy) slant on Belgian history.

Of course their inconsistency comes down to just one thing: they say British when they mean English, repeating the Norman error of thinking that all of Great Britain is England's empire. But we are in a very sad situation that there were more of those traitors in the May election in Gorllewin Casnewydd than pleidwyr.

Without doubt Plaid have lost their way. They are no match for the Flemish parties, which have been distinctive in building an economic case for nationalism. Instead, they have cosied up to the socialist unionists, whose support is based upon ensuring economic failure. We need a party that displays distinctive Welsh liberal values:
1) that has national consciousness; that emphasizes that the Welsh language is the primary language of public life and that any other languages are translations provided as a matter of courtesy;
2) that opposes illiberal laws that criminalize people who are of no harm to society;
3) that affirms the capability of Welsh people; that opposes taxes on success and seeks to move toward the Georgist basis of tax that was contained in David Lloyd George's budget that was rejected by the Lords 101 years ago;
4) that opposes transfers of power away from the people, be they problems with out-of-control local government officers (as is most evident in Ynys Môn) or EU interference;
5) that favours a written constitution to safeguard a liberal, independent Wales.

It was not enough to disestablish the English Church in Wales: we now need to disestablish the English State.

james plaid is a socialist party...so it might be argued that the 'unionist' parties like labour - who are anything but socialist in fact - have in fact been cosying up to plaid. And if you are refering to the one wales agreement theres no question that it was the right thing to do...from plaid's perspective and from the good of wales's perspective. Socialist values are welsh values james...wales is a socialist nation

"that emphasizes that the Welsh language is the primary language of public life and that any other languages are translations provided as a matter of courtesy2..so where does that leave the very large number of people in wales who do not speak any welsh and whos taxes pay for government services? Hardly likely to endear plaid to voters in wales james...and only likely to stir up further animosity to the language from the anti-welsh brigade!

"that opposes illiberal laws that criminalize people who are of no harm to society;"...which i gather is code for the legalising of hard and deadly drugs like heroin ....a disastrous idea that would be ridiculed by our political opponents and destroy plaid's credibility with people in wales...thats why current moves by some misguided folk in plaid to press for the party to support the legalisation of drugs will not succeed.....thankfully.

@Leigh Richards,

I agree with James D's point about the Welsh language. We have to appreciate that Wales as an economic entity can only exist to support the Welsh language. Otherwise what's the point? The economic borders could be drawn in ways far more favourable in terms of material wealth than as Wales/England/Scotland, so there has to be another purpose. That purpose is a distinct identity, which is created by the Welsh language, and little else. Unless of course you think that a second rate rugby team, Brains and Delilah constitute a Welsh identity.
