Well done, David Nutt

Professor David Nutt has been sacked from his job as chief advisor to the Westminster government on drugs policy; a move prompted by his disagreement with the reasons being given for the reclassification of cannabis from Class C to Class B.

He accused ministers of devaluing and distorting evidence and said drugs classification was being politicised. Alan Johnson said,

I cannot have public confusion between scientific advice and policy and have therefore lost confidence in your ability to advise me as Chair of the ACMD [Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs].

BBC, 30 October 2009

So simple, isn't it? If ever there's any conflict between scientific evidence and government policy, Labour want the public to be fed their version. Worse, they don't even want to be told anything that conflicts with their own view.

The report he was sacked for producing is here:

Estimating drug harms: a risky business?
     Press release

Who said Peter Hain was only member of the cabinet who would openly rubbish the findings of experts who Labour ministers themselves appointed to look objectively at the facts?

It's probably not good to comment on one's own posts, but I'd like to modify one thing. Although what has happened is very typical of Labour, there is one consistent and honourable exception among their Welsh MPs: Paul Flynn.

On this he is yet again on the right side of the issue, as his is on subjects like the Afghan war, nuclear power, and a proper law making Parliament for Wales.

I'm not going to shed one tear for other Labour MPs in Wales who will lose their seats next year, but I'd be sad to see this one go. It is one thing to disagree with what your government does—I'm sure there would be quite a few MPs in that positition—but Paul Flynn is prepared to put his head over the parapet and speak out about it.
